For many years Gainesville, Florida has been known
as one of the premier running capitals of the world.
But since the early 80’s, there has been no marathon
in our community. In 2006, the first Five Points of
Life Marathon showcased our great
lifesaving community and our great running
community. This year organizers are excited to
present our 2008 Five Points of Life Marathon.
The Five Points of Life Race Weekend promotes a message of life in two ways:
It
is a fundraiser for LifeSouth’s Five Points of Life program.
The Five Points of Life raises awareness of the need for lifesaving donations
of blood, apheresis, marrow, cord blood, and organ and tissue.
In addition, setting a goal of running or walking a marathon is a great way
to commit to a fitness plan that can make a permanent difference in someone’s
health and life.
Many of our participants and volunteers are donors or recipients; some are both. We'd like to recognize and honor those who donate life, or have received the gift of life by asking you to pin or tie an orange ribbon to your race day attire if you're a donor or a blue on if you're a recipient. Pin it to your hat, race number or back. Somewhere to remind us that, in addition to enjoying a wonderful event, we're here to remember the importance of saving lives by sharing ours.
Runners/Walkers
People of all fitness levels are encouraged to train for the half (13.1 miles)
or whole (26.2 miles) marathon. Donors or recipients of life-saving donations
(blood, apheresis, bone marrow, cord blood, organ & tissue) are contacted
through both local and national donor organizations and invited to join the
Five Points of Life Marathon. Runners of all kinds are contacted through web
sites, magazines, organized events, etc. and encouraged to join the Five Points
of Life Marathon. |
