IBBIS: Integrated Blood Banking Information System
LifeSouth developed this program to manage every step of the blood banking process including:
• Registering donors
• Labeling and tracking blood components
• Managing blood inventory
This FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved software system is a one-of-a-kind blood banking management program for use by blood banks. LifeSouth can now provide this service to other blood banks.
It took LifeSouth software developers four years to build the software program from the ground up, beginning with the release of IBBIS 1.0 which was approved by the FDA in 2009. On Feb. 11, 2009, IBBIS registered its first donor and has since registered 1,855,575 donors and counting. The LifeSouth software team monitors, evaluates and continues to improve the software.
In January 2014, IBBIS version 3.0 was approved by the FDA for use by other blood banks. Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) was the first blood center beyond LifeSouth to implement the software. The launch took place in March 2014. IBBIS establishes a uniform process for blood management, helping standardize the blood banking industry.
“Working together we accomplished in six months what others wouldn’t have been able to complete in two years,” said Martin Grable, President and CEO of CBCC. “Our collaboration on IBBIS is leading to collaboration in other areas. Having a trusted partner contributes to the learning, development and betterment of both of our blood centers.”
