LifeSouth @ Dragon Con 2016

Dragon Con is a major donation venue for LifeSouth, which serves more than 40 hospitals in the Atlanta area and more than 110 hospitals in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. In 2015, the drive welcomed 3171 donors and collected 2,678 units, assisted by a crew of more than 60 people from all three states who descended on Atlanta to handle the flood of donors in costume.

This year, we will be sending over a staff of 200 with approximately 150 coming from outside the Atlanta area. Stop by LifeSouth’s blood drives at Dragon Con and discover first-hand why it’s America’s most fun way to save a life.

Donors must be 17 years of age or 16 with parental consent, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is required.

Patrick Kelley Memorial Blood Drive: a Difference Maker

When Patrick Kelley was in Boy Scouts he organized a blood drive as a project to help the Gainesville community. On Dec. 19 he’ll be remembered at a special blood drive held in his honor from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 Brenau Ave., Gainesville.

Patrick died in a car crash on his 18th birthday in 2011, and friends then organized a blood drive to honor the musically-talented Gainesville High School student. That blood drive is now an annual event, and more than 100 blood donors have participated over the years.

“I think he’d be thrilled,” said Patrick’s mother Cheryl Kelley. “He thought it was important. He thought the blood supply was important, and he thought community was important.”

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers will host the blood drive, which is open to the public. Donors must be at least 17, or 16 with parental permission, weigh at least 110 […]

Donate & Celebrate: Williams’ Birthday Gifts Can Be a Lifesaver

Four years ago Angeleck Williams of Decatur, Alabama, was looking at Facebook and read about a woman who was celebrating her birthday by hosting a blood drive.

“I loved that idea,” she said. “I thought it was a great way to bring attention to a need in our community.”

A Williams Birthday blood driveSo, on Aug. 6, 2012, with the cooperation and support of her bosses at the accounting firm Byrd, Smalley and Adams PC in downtown Decatur, she invited LifeSouth to pull its big red, white and blue bloodmobile up to the front door and called on friends, clients and anybody who wanted to help, to stop by to donate and celebrate with the goal of getting a donor for each of her 42 years. She said the fun of that day exceeded her expectations by a thousandfold.

“To meet the goal was very […]

Turnbull Will Hit a Lifesaving Milestone Monday

Gregg Turnbull 399When Gregg Turnbull of Dothan pops the DVD of Hoosiers into the player and settles in the comfy donor chair at LifeSouth Community Blood Centers Monday afternoon, he’ll be rolling up his sleeve for his 400th donation that will earn him the rare 50-Galloneer status.

Turnbull said it all started out of convenience. He worked in personnel at the hospital at Fort Dix when he was in the Army.

“It just got to be a habit, so I kept it up,” he said. “When I got my first gallon I was on a gurney in an auditorium as part of a class.”

At first glance, he hardly looks like a superhero who has saved thousands of lives over the years. At 5-foot-4-inches tall and 117 pounds, he’s just seven pounds over the minimum weight to donate. But LifeSouth Apheresis Tech Amad […]

Weather Delivers Another Blow to Blood Supply

Snow and icy roads delivered another blow to the area’s blood supply, and LifeSouth is asking its donors all across North Alabama for help once the roads are safe for travel.

“With snow and ice closing the roads, we lost two full days of operations, so we’ll really have some ground to make up. Once it’s safe for our donors to travel we’re really going to need their help,” said LifeSouth North Alabama District Director Jason Hodges. “Our aim now is reopen our centers and have our bloodmobiles back on the road later today.”

“The snow and ice storms impacted several of our blood drives in North Alabama and Georgia, covering some of the largest communities we serve,” said LifeSouth Vice President of Operations J.B. Bowles. “Weather last week already pushed our supply to emergency levels […]
