LifeSouth Blood Donors Help Local Cancer Patients

Approximately 30 percent of all blood transfusions in the U.S. go to cancer patients, who often need them to replace crucial elements of their blood that are damaged or lost during their treatment. Patients who undergo chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or who have a cancer that affects the blood, such as leukemia or lymphoma, often need blood transfusions. Thousands of lives are saved every day thanks to blood donors.

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation damage the bone marrow cells that are responsible for making the body’s blood and platelets. The low blood cell counts caused by these treatments can cause bleeding or worsen infections. Patients undergoing these treatments may receive multiple transfusions of platelets or red blood cells. Surgery patients can also need transfusions of red blood cells, plasma or platelets to replace blood lost during the procedure.

LifeSouth invites the community to donate blood and give someone in need a chance at life. Cancer patients in local hospitals are counting on lifesaving blood donors in their community to ensure that blood is there when they need it. Please stop by one of our donor centers or visit lifesouth.org to find a blood drive near you.

Blood donors must be at least 17 (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required. For more information on donating blood, call toll-free 888-795-2707 or read our FAQs.
